3 “Rough Fish” Species That Are Recognized as Game Fish

Many anglers have their fish species that they prefer to pursue and focus on. From largemouth bass to coldwater trout, there are many species that are obvious favorites. This also means that there are plenty of underappreciated species of fish, also known as “rough fish”. While still recognized as game fish, these fish are often overlooked. Let’s talk about three rough fish species that deserve a bigger spotlight and that you should look into!

1. Northern Snakehead

The Northern snakehead is a non-native fish that looks similar to the bowfin even though they are not related at all. These fish have very unique markings, and unlike most other fish, can actually breathe air! They are a challenge to catch because of the places they love to live and how elusive they are. They can survive in very shallow water that is stagnant. This would be a death sentence to other fish species, but because they can breathe air and live in harsh conditions, snakeheads thrive here. Snakeheads are fun to catch because they can grow to large sizes and be very aggressive. The battles with these fish are intense and you can catch them just like you catch bass. You can even use the same fishing gear and lures as you would for bass so you do not even need new equipment!

2. Alligator Gar

Next on our list is the infamous alligator gar. This is the largest species of gar and can grow up to 250 pounds. Easily considered a “trash fish” and almost wiped out at one point, this was reversed when people realized how important they are to the ecosystem. They prefer to live in freshwater ponds, rivers, and lakes but they can also survive in saltwater. With their large toothy mouths, they can be a challenge to successfully catch. Catching an alligator gar on a hook and line can be a challenge and provide an angler with one of the best fights of their lives.

3. Common Carp

Easily the most common “rough fish” is the common carp. These fish are what everyone thinks of when they think of rough or trash fish, as they are often overpopulated in many areas and are not too great to eat. But many people do not realize that carp can actually put up a great fight on the rod and reel, and can be a great experience to catch. Since they are an invasive species, many places have unlimited bag limits and regulations on these fish, which can make a day or a night of underrated fishing and nonstop action.

Final Thoughts

Fishing for “rough fish” can provide a new and unique experience for many anglers. These fish are often overlooked, but they really shouldn’t be and can be one of your new favorites to focus on.
