How Your Cost to Start Fishing Can Be Less Than $50

For many new anglers, the cost to start fishing is the biggest hurdle in the process of learning how to fish. Luckily, it is not quite as expensive as most people would believe. If you have ever wondered about the cost to start fishing, you may be surprised to find out that you can actually get started on $50 or even less! How do you do it? Let’s talk about it!

Cost of Fishing License

The very first thing that you will need is a fishing license. This is one cost that will vary quite a bit depending on the state that you are living in. However, most states provide annual fishing licenses for residents of the states they service for very affordable prices. In general, you can expect to pay anywhere from $15 to $25 for a fishing license for your state. Again, this will vary but you will need to get this before doing anything else!

Cost of Fishing Gear

The biggest start-up cost of fishing comes with the gear you will need. Luckily there are plenty of great budget options and kits that will provide you with a rod, reel, line, and even baits and hooks in order to get started. You can buy something like a freshwater spinning or spin cast combo rod and reel for as low as $20 in some cases. This will come with a fishing line and sometimes even includes a few bobbers and lures as well. These are great for beginners and are extremely affordable.

Once you have a fishing rod and reel, you will only need to buy some weights, maybe some hooks, and other small accessories in order to get started. These are generally very affordable, and should only cost a couple of dollars. Lures will also usually come in packs of multiple pieces, so buying one will last you for a while. If you want some live bait, you can even dig around in the garden for some worms and you are ready to hit the water and get you started into fishing!

Final Thoughts

Getting started into fishing does not have to be expensive at all. While it is true that some fishing gear is expensive, you do not need this gear to just get started and start catching fish. As long as you have your license, a rod and reel, and some basic accessories, you have everything you need to start the process and begin learning!
