The Texas rig is one of the most popular techniques used for fishing with soft plastic lures. It is very easy to assemble and works well in a large variety of different situations and water. If you have never used one before and want to know how to make one, you have come to the right place!
Let’s Get Started
To get started, you will need a few basic pieces of tackle. This includes a slip sinker, an offset hook, your fishing line, and the plastic lure that you intend to use. The first step will be taking your line and threading it through your weight. You will then tie the line onto your hook, making sure that you use a strong knot that is properly tied!
From here, you are now ready to attach the soft plastic lure onto your hook. First, insert the tip of the hook around ¼ inch into the lure on the top side. This will also largely depend on the plastic lure that you are using, but just make sure that you start near the top of the lure (regardless of the style that you are using). This should also coincide with the bend of the hook.
Next Steps
Now expose the point of the hook and slide the lure up along the shank all the way up to the eye of the hook. Be careful not to accidentally tear or destroy the soft plastic lure while you work it up the hook. From here, rotate your plastic lure so that the hook point is facing down, and thread the point through the lure one more time. It should go all the way through the lure. You should make sure that the plastic lure stays fairly straight during this last part, in order to make it look more uniform and perform properly.
From here you are pretty much done unless you want to make it “weedless” style! All this involves is putting the point of the hook back into the soft plastic for a short amount, so that it is hidden. This will keep the hook from getting snagged in weeds or vegetation while fishing. Once a bass bites onto the lure, however, it will expose the sharp point of the hook and pierce the fish.And there you have it! As we said, the Texas rig is extremely easy to set up but it can be absolutely devastating on the water.
