How To Catch GIANT Golden Tilefish and Swordfish

For offshore anglers, there are few fish better than golden tilefish and swordfish. If you catch both of these fish on the same trip, you have hit the jackpot. Here is how to catch some giant golden tilefish and swordfish on your next fishing adventure.

Golden Tilefish

These fish are often found in warm waters at depths ranging from 500 to 900 feet. They can be found along the length of the eastern United States and have been caught as deep as 1500 feet. Golden tilefish love to live in areas with soft bottoms like clay. This gives them a place to make burrows and guard themselves against other predators.

Catching golden tilefish involves using a heavy rig at the bottom with a fresh bait like squid or cut bait. One of the favorite rigs of the pros is called the “lay down rig”. This consists of two weights and a heavy leader that lets it sink down very quickly. It also is able to drag across the bottom, kicking up sediment and dirt while it moves.

Tilefish can grow up to 4 feet and 80 pounds, although 5 to 10-pound fish are average. Either way, be prepared for a fight as they can pull their own weight. For baits, stick to things like tuna, squid, mackerel, and barracuda. These are scent and sight feeders, so if you put your rig in the right place you can usually get their attention and convince them to bite.

Swordfish

Swordfish are among the greatest predators in the sea and are pursued by anglers for their fight and their delicious meat. These fish are on almost every angler’s bucket list, and catching them is no easy feat. You will need a lot of patience, high-end quality fishing gear, and plenty of determination.

Swordfish are best pursued by trolling large expanses of the ocean, using fresh bait to lure them in. Squid is the favorite bait, and swordfish love them. Spanish mackerel is another popular option that is widely used. These baits must be paired with heavy-duty line and fishing gear as these fish grow to some large sizes.
