So how do you start your own worm bait farm? It is actually much simpler than you might think.
The first step to creating your own worm farm is to find a suitable location. You will need some kind of container to keep them in. The size will depend on how large of a farm you want, and many people will use something like plastic tubs, old dressers, wooden boxes, or anything else that they might already have on hand.
Whatever you decide to keep your worms in, just remember to drill a few holes in the bottom of the container in order to let fluids drain out. Worms can actually drown if liquids cannot drain out properly! Find a container that is plenty large enough to house your worms. You can choose whatever works best for you and what your goals are.
Next, set up your worms with the right soil and materials. This is called bedding and can be created using things like shredded cardboard, shredded newspaper, old leaves, yard scraps, and other materials that are mixed with some fresh soil. Once you have their home all set up, now it is time to finally get your worms!
Once you have everything set up and your worms are placed in their new home, it is time to feed them. Most people are unaware that worms require regular feeding just like any other animal or pet. The good thing, however, is that worms are not picky eaters and things like kitchen scraps such as carrot skins, potato peels, eggshells, and even grass clippings work great. In a pinch, you can even shred up old newspapers and they will even eat that!
For every two pounds of worms that you have, aim to feed them around one pound of food. Try to feed them daily, especially if you have a larger worm farm. Simply drop the food onto the topsoil, and your worms will come and find it!
From here, it is simply caring for your worms and ensuring that they are fed and happy. Water down their soil occasionally when it becomes too dry, and make sure they are getting plenty to eat. In no time, you will have a sustainable source of fishing bait that you can rely on whenever you are ready for your next trip.
