Beginner’s Guide To Spearfishing

Spearfishing is one of the most ancient forms of fishing in the world, and even though it is not practiced for survival anymore, it is still a ton of fun to do. Surprisingly, spearfishing has not changed that much over the years either. So what do you need to know if you want to get into spearfishing for yourself? Let’s go over a few simple things that you need to know if you want to get your start in spearfishing for the first time.

Safety First

No matter where it is, spearfishing can be very dangerous if you are not careful. Before anything else, have safety in the front of your mind. There are plenty of ways that you can get injured, so coming into it with safety and precaution first will be the best way to avoid any accidents. From sharp spears, water currents, and sharks, there is plenty that you need to be aware of. A few simple tips to stay safe include:

  • Spearfish with a friend. They will be an extra set of eyes and it is always safer with more people.
  • Never mistreat or misuse your spear or speargun.
  • Avoid areas with high traffic such as boating or kayaking areas.
  • Take your time and always go up for air sooner than you think you need to.

Hold Your Breath

Spearfishing involves diving down to get where the fish are hiding, so you will have to hold your breath for longer periods of time unless you are using scuba gear. The longer that you can hold your breath, the longer you will be able to hunt and the more fish you are going to find. Before going out spearfishing, it is a great idea to learn and practice how to hold your breath for long periods of time.

Bring the Right Gear

Lastly, don’t go out without the proper gear you need for a spearfishing dive. For beginners, going with a guide will help outfit you with everything that you need as well as teach you how to do it, but if going out with friends or others, bring everything you will need to spearfish and stay safe. Research the type of speargun, goggles, and fins that are needed and legal where you will be hunting. Some areas will have special restrictions, so do a little homework around the area you plan to be.

Final Thoughts

Spearfishing can be very fun and extremely rewarding, but you should make sure you are properly prepared before going out. By taking a few simple precautions and doing a little bit of homework, you will know better how to do it and avoid the big learning curve that comes along with it.
