3 Cheap Pieces of Gear You Need to Have in Your Backcountry Survival Pack

When it comes to the backcountry, it pays to be prepared. You never know when things could happen, and the backcountry can throw just about anything your way. Most hunters, hikers, and outdoorsmen have a survival kit with them in case they ever need it but have you ever wondered what goes into these survival packs?

You will usually find things like bandages, a map, a knife, a first aid kit, and other items that you would need if you ever got lost or found yourself in a dangerous situation. But what are some cheap items that you can throw into your survival kit that you need to have no matter what? Let’s take a look at three of them that are low in cost but high in priority!

1. Fire Starter

In any survival situation, there are few things as important and critical as having the ability to start a fire. From staying warm to cooking food, fire is incredibly versatile and can literally save your life. If you are in colder climates, this simple little tool to start a fire is even more important. In addition to staying warm, it can be used to boil water to sterilize it in bad situations. There are many different types of fire starters out there, but one of the most reliable is the striker-type starters that can be used in conjunction with your knife or any other piece of metal. A striker will never run out of fuel or stop working if it gets wet, making it the most reliable type out there.

2. Lifestraw Personal Water Filter

You can only survive so long without water, so if you happen to get lost or stranded somewhere you can at least get fresh water with your own water filter. This handy little device is super small and compact, allowing you to carry it with you anywhere you go. You do not need any additional bottles or containers with the Lifestraw, as you can simply put the end in the water and use it as a straw through the other end. Now you don’t need to boil water in order to sterilize it, or ever have to worry about getting sick from dirty water ever again.

3. All Weather Space Blanket

Last but not least, one of the cheapest but most versatile pieces of survival gear that anyone can have in their pack is a simple space blanket. These come in all shapes and sizes, but all function the same. These blankets reflect your heat back to you in order to keep you home, although they have many other uses. They are water-resistant, so in bad weather, you can use the blanket to construct a shelter or use it as a poncho. They are very bright and reflective, allowing search crews to help find you more easily. Last but not least, these little blankets are super lightweight and pack down smaller than a cellphone.
